This via Boing Boing: one of the tech Crunch 40 conference finalists has setup shop providing a platform for people to create their own virtual worlds. Meta Place promises to:
let you build anything, and play everything, from anywhere. Eventually, anyway. We have to finish it first.
I think this was inevitable given the popularity and issues with closed virtual worlds like Second Life. I really like the idea of being able to quickly build a virtual world using my own paradigm. The one issue I see is how do you attract users to your world vs. the hundreds (and if they are successful, millions) of others that are out there? How does a user of one metaplace workd easily discover and get to another one? If they have a great way to answer that (and of course awesome tools for developers) then the metaplace guys (and gals?) are really on to something.
