Interesting post from Bubblegeneration on why an investment by Microsoft in Facebook makes so much sense: because their strategies are both aligned around user lock-in and driving a platform. While I admit that at first I was hesitant to do a lot in Facebook because it seemed like such a closed ecosystem, as more apps that bring in my data from where it lives elsewhere on the web (flickr, my blog, twitter, etc) so that I maintain control and don’t have to do everything twice, I have been spending more and more time on Facebook. Is this openness just a thin veneer, hiding a bear trap platform? Perhaps, but for the time being, the power of the social network will keep me coming back…until something better and a bit less evil gains traction.
