I’ve heard that they use different sweeteners in the regular versions of Coke (beet sugar in Mexico, Cane sugar in the US), but I had never heard that the Diet Coke artificial sweetener in Europe was different than the US. I wish they would have used the European version in the US years ago…I would have switched sooner.

They use High Fructose Corn Syrup in the US. It's much cheaper than cane sugar due to agricultural subsidies.
If you want cane sugar in your Coke, buy Kosher for Passover Coke. There is some interpretation of keeping kosher that includes restrictions on grains, hence the lack of corn syrup in kosher Coke…I don't know why I know that.
